Dear Parents,
As I write this letter, the leaves are falling making way for the winter season. It is my hope that you had the opportunity to enjoy time with family and friends during the Thanksgiving break. It is the time of year when I take time to reflect about things for which I am grateful. Being the principal of this great high school is at the top of my list!
So far (as of October 28th) we have much to celebrate. Wheaton North High School is proud to announce that we have thirteen National Merit Semifinalists: Josh Billingham, Katina Bolos, Kevin Bomher, Ethan Brauer, Will Bywaters, Meghan Exner, April Jenkins, Flora Jin, Corey Kollbocker, Karl Lykken, Rachel McGivern, Anita Sherbeck and Alex Taira. These semifinalists represent the top 1% of seniors across the nation, and now have the opportunity to compete in the National Merit Finalist competition. Additionally, we have fourteen National Merit Commended Students: Benjamin Barry, Todd Bogue, David Brinkman, Hannah Farnsworth, Michael Grover, Dayna Hansberger, Molly Hutzler, Jessica Iszczyszyn, Abbey Krentz, Devyn Manschot, Josh Oakley, Paul Rebman, Jacintha Sales, and Rachel Staky. These commended students represent the top 2% – 4% of the seniors across the nation who took the test. Congratulations to both the Semifinalists and Commended students, their parents, their teachers, and District 200 for preparing them to reach their potential!
In addition to our National Merit honorees, the following students have been selected as the Illinois Music Education Association District 9 Musicians: Band – Susannah Saylor, Adam Spahn, Devyn Manschot; Orchestra – Sareena Daniel, Emma Grisanzio, Marianthie Wank, Noah Whitney; Chorus – Bethany Albright, Michael Grover, Elisabeth Holaway, Ian Koziara, Samantha Long, Jenna Truty; Jazz Band – Josh Billingham; and Vocal Jazz – Meagan Bruck, Micha Tryba. Wheaton North High School is very proud of these fine musicians! We extend our congratulations to their teachers: Mrs. Nooden, Mr. Noworyta, and Mr. Rudd for preparing them for this level of competition.
As you read through this newsletter, please make note of the many upcoming events occurring in December, January, and early February. As noted in the last newsletter, first semester concludes after the winter break. The exam schedule includes shortened days on January 13, 14, and 15, 2010. Students are expected to be in attendance on exam days unless they are sick. There is a small break between first and second semester: January 18 – no school due to Martin Luther King holiday and January 19 – no school for students due to teacher records day. Second semester begins officially on Wednesday, January 20, 2010. As you know, many classes and teachers change during this transition so Wheaton North will be hosting a second semester Parent Curriculum Night on Wednesday, February 3 rd at 7:00 p.m. Details for Curriculum Night are included in this newsletter.
As always, if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. I am aware of the concerns regarding the H1N1 flu and flu season. Updated information is continually being posted to the District 200 website: www.cusd200.org . As we are given information from the DuPage County Health Department, we pass it on to our parents. To date, our absentee rate has not exceeded what we would consider “normal” for this time of year. The DuPage CHD monitors all schools daily attendance. We count on parents to report when students are home with the flu or flu- like symptoms. Additionally, we ask that students who are sick stay home. I hope you enjoy the upcoming holiday season celebrating with family and friends. It continues to be a privilege to serve the students and community of Wheaton North High School.
Sincerely,
Jill Bullo, principal

Did You Know?
Beginning January 1 st, 2010 two new laws will go into effect in order to strengthen Illinois laws on distracted driving. The new laws “ban” text messaging while driving, and using a cell phone when in a school or construction zones.
The penalty for violating either of these measures results in a moving violation that will go on the motorist’s driving record as well as accompanying fines and court costs to be determined by the judge.
You can log onto the Secretary of States web site if you have any further question about the new laws regarding teenage drivers at www.cyberdriveillinois.com. Mr. Mike Oleszek (630) 784-7490; moleszek@cusd200.org
Even though the media has been overwhelmingly presenting the Novel H1N1 evolving story for the past nine months, there are some good health tips to be learned about infection control. Each of us can protect our own health and that of others by:
- Washing our hands frequently.
- Covering our mouth when we cough with either a disposable tissue or your sleeve.
- STAY HOME when you do not feel well and stay home for the extra day when you have had a temperature over 100 degrees.
- Drink plenty of fluids and rest as much as possible.
- See a doctor with symptoms of; difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen, sudden dizziness, confusion, severe or persistent vomiting, if flu like symptoms improve then return with fever and worse cough.
- Remember stress and fatigue can affect your body’s ability to fight infections.
- The H1N1 immunization is recommended even if you have already experienced ‘flu like symptoms’
- Get the facts about your illness from a reliable source.
Accurate and timely information can be found at http://www.cdc.gov or http://ready.illinois.gov or http://www.protectdupage.org or by calling the DuPage County Health Department hotline for H1N1 information at 630/ 221-7600.
District 200 has a close partnership with the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) and follows their guidance for illness notification and cleaning procedures. The most recent information available from the DCHD can be viewed on the district website at http://CUSD200.org.
We hope you are having a great school year. I would like to take this opportunity to summarize two important services in our office that involve safety and student support. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
School Safety/Drills
Safety is a number one priority at Wheaton North. We do everything we can to ensure a safe environment for our students. For that reason, we have a number of safety procedures for a variety of crisis situations. We work closely with the Wheaton Police and Fire Departments to coordinate our efforts. To begin, we run three fire drills per year. We also conduct one lockdown drill, one severe weather drill, and one bus evacuation drill. After we conduct these drills, we review them to help us best prepare for the situations. In addition, we have off-site emergency evacuation areas in the case that we have to vacate the building. Our walking site is Wheaton Bowl, and our travel site is Wheaton-Warrenville South High School. These sites have been approved by the District Safety Committee. We urge you to make sure your telephone information is accurate in case we need to contact you from one of these sites.
Support Staff
One of our goals is for all students to receive the best possible education and to have a successful and rewarding experience at Wheaton North High School. Many adolescents, though, confront challenges both in and out of school that may interfere with their education and/or personal growth if not properly addressed. In addition to our teaching staff, we have a multitude of support staff to assist our students. These include the deans, guidance counselors, school nurse, school resource officer, social workers and psychologists. Our support staff teams meet weekly to discuss students who are at risk to receiving a quality education due to poor grades, attendance, behavior and/or outside influences. At these weekly meetings, we also determine appropriate interventions for these students. Parents and guardians are also an important part of this team. We will contact you to discuss our concerns and work with you to devise a plan to assist your student. Please contact a member of your student’s support team if you have any questions or concerns.
Seniors - Don’t miss the chance to receive a $500 scholarship from the Wheaton North Falcon Booster Club! Up to ten awards will be made to senior students who have been active in Wheaton North activities and plan to attend a one to four year accredited educational program after graduation.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of participation in Wheaton North activities (such as athletics, performing arts, student clubs, and other school related activities), leadership, a personal statement and academic record.
Applications may be submitted now through April 7, 2010. Forms, including instructions and further information, are available in the school Guidance Office or may be downloaded from the Booster Club website at www.wnhsboosters.org. It’s never too early to get started on your application!
Attention Senior Parents
Hopefully, your senior student has completed most, if not all, of their college applications. However, this is just a reminder that students should turn in applications and transcripts to their counselor for colleges with a January 1 st deadline no later than Monday, December 14th. This will ensure the counselor and registrar have ample time to complete any necessary forms (i.e. recommendation letters, counselor page, etc.) and mail the application/transcript before Winter Break.
Second Semester Course Verification Forms
Students’ second semester course verification sheets will be distributed to students on Friday, December 4th during 3 rd period. Students and parents should review this form for accuracy and speak with their respective counselors with any questions. Students will have the opportunity to request a schedule change for elective courses only from Monday, December 7th through Friday, December 11th. After the11th, no schedule change requests will be honored.
Course Selection Calendar
Beginning in January, counselors will begin meeting with freshmen, sophomores, and juniors to determine students’ course selections for the 2010-2011 school year. This is a two meeting process. The first meeting is an information session and will take place in mid-January. In this session counselors will discuss graduation requirements, new courses, and the overall course selection procedure. First semester teachers will recommend students for the 2010-2011 school year using the school’s scheduling software. These recommendations/courses will be automatically placed on students’ schedules for next year. Students will be given their recommendations during the course selection information session. Parents play a vital role in this process and should discuss and review their student’s recommendations and course selection sheet before signing off on final selections. The second meeting is a completion session where students present their course selections to their counselors. Completion sessions will begin in late January and continue through mid-February.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The quickest and most convenient way to complete the FAFSA is by using the on-line application. However, in order to use the on-line application a pin number is required. All parents and their dependent students applying for financial aid for the 2010-11 school year should get their pin number NOW! To obtain a pin number simply go to www.pin.ed.gov .
After January 1, 2009, you can go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete the FAFSA. Individual help in completing the FAFSA is available daily from the financial aid professional at the College of DuPage (630/942-2251). You do not have to be a COD student, present or future, to receive this invaluable help.
Scholarship Bulletin
Every month the Guidance Department provides students and parents with a list of local scholarships and some national scholarships through the Scholarship Bulletin. The Scholarship Bulletin is updated monthly and is available in the College and Career Center and on-line at wnhs.org →Counseling→Guidance Department→College/Career Resources. Senior students can also access it through PrepHq. Please have your student contact their counselor if he/she has forgotten their PrepHq log-in ID and password.
Local Scholarship Application
The Local Scholarship Application is now available in the College and Career Center. This is a great opportunity for students to apply for a number of scholarships by filling out one application. This year there are fourteen scholarships that are generously endowed by local community organizations. Awards range from $350 to $1500. The deadline for the application is Thursday, February 25, 2010.

Other Financial Aid Sites
College Zone.com - The website from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission is a site that provides scholarship and financial aid information. It is an excellent resource that provides the information you need, when you need it. College Zone also offers Outreach Centers at all 48 community colleges in Illinois. Wheaton North students and parents are invited to make an appointment with the Outreach advisors in the financial aid office at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, (630) 942-4264. Again, you do not need to be a COD student to receive this service.
Finally, College Zone Advisors can be reached by phone (8:30a.m.-5:00p.m.) at 1-800-899-4722 and email (collegezone@isac.org).
PrepHq.com – Provides both the scholarships listed on the WNHS scholarship bulletin along with more detailed national list. It also highlights other financial aid information as well. A log-in is needed, so students should see their counselor if they have forgotten theirs.

A Helpful Tip: Scholarship Scams – 10 Warning Signs*
- FEES – You shouldn’t have to pay to search for or apply for scholarships. Scholarships are about giving not taking!
- Credit card/bank account information needed: You should never have to give credit card or bank information to award providers.
- Scholarship guarantee: No one can guarantee that you’ll win a scholarship because no one can control scholarship judges’ decisions. Also, be wary of “high success rates” – they usually do not refer to actual award winners.
- No work involved: With the exception of sweepstakes, legitimate scholarshipapplications require time andenergy.
- No contact information: Legitimate sponsors shouldprovide contact informationupon request. If the sponsor does not supply a valid e-mail address, phone number and mailing address (not a PO box) upon request, that could be the sign of a scam.
- Unsolicited scholarships: If you are called to receive an award for which you never applied, be alert – it’s most likely a scam.
- Pressure tactics: Don’t allow yourself to be pressured into applying for a scholarship, especially if the sponsor is asking you to pay.
- Claims of “exclusive” scholarships: Legitimatesponsors won’t restrictknowledge about their award toa single search service.
- An official-sounding name or endorsement doesn’t automatically mean legitimacy: A sponsor may usewords similar to legitimate organizations or have an official-looking seal, but might still be a scammer. Also, the federal government andthe U.S. Dept. of Education do not endorse private businesses.
- Your questions aren’t answered directly: If you can’tget a straight answer from asponsor regarding their application, what will be done with your information (e.g., if it will be sent to a third party) or other questions proceed with caution.
*If you still have doubts about a particular scholarship you should contact your student’s counselor immediately.

On October 22, 2009, the Board of Education for District 200 appointed Dr. Charles Baker Acting Superintendent for the remainder of the 2009-10 school year. Dr. Baker is a familiar face in District 200 and brings a wealth of experience and talent to this new position. In 1972, he joined the district as an English and social studies teacher at Edison Middle School and remained there for eleven years. In 1983, he transferred to Wheaton Central High School as the English department chair. In two short years, he became assistant principal and in 1988 was named principal. In 1992, the school relocated becoming Wheaton Warrenville South High School and Dr. Baker remained principal until 2004. Following his retirement as principal, he joined the central office administration as director of secondary education.
On accepting the acting superintendent position, Dr. Baker commented, “My tenure in District 200 has provided a strong foundation for an understanding of the issues we face. We should never forget that this district is a high-performance school district, and the reason for that is the support it receives from the community, the eagerness of our students, the quality of our faculty and staff, and a Board of Education committed to maintaining that tradition.”
The Board of Education is moving forward immediately to secure a permanent superintendent and hopes to name that individual by mid to late spring with a starting date of July 1, 2010.

Spring Sports
Spring sports season for Boys Gymnastics will begin practice on Monday, February 15, 2010. Boys Baseball, Girls Badminton, Boys Tennis, Girls Soccer and Girls Softball will begin March 1, 2010. And last, Boys Volleyball will begin on March 8, 2010. Listed below we have included coaches contact information if you have questions or comments regarding practices, starting times, and location for each sport. If you want to participate but cannot make the first meeting, please call the Athletic Office (630-784-7318) and let us know. All participants must have a current physical, a parental permission form filled out and signed, and an emergency card for the trainer, before beginning practice. Freshmen may use their freshman physical; simply make a copy for the Athletic Office and mark it at top “Athletics”. This should have been turned in at registration for the nurse’s requirements. These forms can be downloaded from our web site or stop by the Athletic Office and pick them up.
Open gym schedule for each spring sport will begin several weeks before practice begins for students not involved in a winter sport. Check with head coaches and listen to announcements.
If you have any questions about practice times or tryouts, please contact the head coach
